Juneteenth, formally known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated annually on June 19th to mark the abolition of slavery in the country. The name "Juneteenth" combines "June" and "nineteenth," signifying the date in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger issued the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas, officially freeing enslaved individuals after the Civil War's end.

Initially observed in 1866 through church-centered gatherings in Texas, Juneteenth quickly spread throughout the Southern states among newly liberated African Americans. By the 1920s and 1930s, celebrations became more widespread and commercialized, often featuring communal meals and cultural festivities. The Great Migration of African Americans further disseminated Juneteenth traditions across the nation.

During the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Juneteenth observances temporarily declined but resurged in the 1970s with renewed emphasis on African American heritage and artistic expression. Since Texas' proclamation in 1938 and subsequent legislative recognitions, every U.S. state and the District of Columbia has acknowledged Juneteenth in some form.

In addition to the United States, Juneteenth is celebrated by the Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles who escaped slavery and settled in Coahuila, Mexico, in 1852.

Juneteenth gained federal recognition as a holiday in 2021 with the passage of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making it the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

Today, Juneteenth is considered a significant African American holiday, often dubbed "America's second Independence Day." Festivities typically include community gatherings, picnics, historical reenactments, and cultural exhibitions. Traditional activities range from public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation to performances of African American music and dance. The holiday also serves as a platform for education on African American history and culture, emphasizing resilience, heritage, and community pride.
